Welcome to Butler College
Since 2020, our Senior Secondary students have performed exceptionally well in ATAR courses, with the average median ATAR just below 80 and above comparable schools. In recent years, numerous students have won awards from the School Curriculum and Standards Authority (SCSA), including Subject Certificates of Excellence, Subject Exhibition, Certificates of Distinction and Certificates of Merit. General and VET pathways complement our ATAR pathway. Hospitality, Engineering and Sports Coaching Certificate qualifications are delivered onsite and we work closely with other providers to ensure students access the full suite of VET Delivered to Secondary Students (VETDSS) opportunities.
A key aspect of our College is the endorsed Education Support Program, which supports 80 students with special education and medical needs. Facilities include a hydrotherapy pool and a range of sensory spaces. As an integrated site, students benefit from high levels of expertise, support, and the opportunity to integrate with other students where appropriate.
Our Student Wellbeing team leads from the front in delivering on our mission, 'A College that Cares'. The well-resourced team comprises several professionals including School Psychologists, Chaplain, Aboriginal and Islander Education Officer, Student Support Officer, Student Support Coordinator, Lead Teachers and a Program Coordinator. Their approach uses restorative practices to support students in building and maintaining positive relationships throughout the College.
We have worked relentlessly to develop our Intentional Teaching model in the Learning Areas of Maths, English, Science and the Humanities. This model produces the skills students need to experience success post-school. As a result, students are exposed to a low-variance curriculum that can be scaffolded and extended to support their needs. We’ve invested heavily in professional learning for staff through Teach Well; students are exposed to high-impact teaching strategies and are expected to participate in lessons using regular checks for understanding. Guided practice, followed by independent practice, allows students to embed the skills they have learnt regularly.
Within our Health & Physical Education Learning Area, students benefit from access to outstanding facilities, including multiple grass pitches, hard courts, an indoor gymnasium and a weights room. We run specialist sports academies in Soccer and Netball, providing aspiring athletes the opportunity to be coached by highly qualified coaches and compete against other schools throughout the year.
The Arts delivers a high-quality and engaging environment for students. Performing Arts focuses on Music and Dance, working closely with the Instrumental Music School Services (IMSS) to provide music students with additional learning and performance opportunities. Performing Arts students enjoy multiple opportunities to showcase their talents at school events, showcase evenings and out-of-school performances and competitions. We deliver both traditional Visual Arts and Design in the Visual Arts pathways. Our Digital Media and Photography expertise provides students access to our state-of-the-art resources and facilities, including our incredible TV and Audio Recording studios, providing students with the highest level of exposure to real-world technology and applications.
Technologies offer clear pathways for students within each context. Our Woodworking and Metalworking facilities and expertise prepare students for various trade pathways and vocational activities. Food Science exposes students to modern techniques and approaches leading up to our highly regarded Hospitality Certificate courses. Our Digital Technologies team focus on building the necessary skills for our students to be successful in the modern world.
We have experienced significant success in interschool debating, with teams regularly competing in the WA Debating League and reaching the finals in their respective age groups. Our Senior Secondary team were the State Champions in the Western Australia Debating League competition in 2022, becoming just the fourth Public School to achieve the feat. Our students have also succeeded in WA British Parliamentary Debating (State Champions 2021) and the national UN Youth Voice Public Speaking competition (National Champion 2021).
The Year 7-10 Academic Extension Program provides a challenging pathway, targeting students who intend to pursue an ATAR pathway in Senior Secondary. Academic Extension students benefit from learning with a cohort of driven peers, engaging in a range of curricular and extra-curricular opportunities to enhance their learning experience. Entrance to this program is competitive, and testing takes place during Year 6 due to the competition for places in the program.
